The result keeps the group delicately balanced, with all four teams still in the hunt for a place in the quarter-finals, reports the Bangkok Post.

After two rounds of matches, China lead the group with four points, Australia sit just behind on three, Iraq remain third with two draws, and Thailand trail with a single point.

The next fixtures will be decisive with Thailand facing China in a must-win encounter, while Iraq take on Australia in what could be a qualification decider.

The game began at a frenetic pace. Iraq nearly struck within the opening minutes when Layth Mahmood delivered a precise cross into the box, only for Aymen Luay to misfire his volley.

Thailand, who had suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat to Australia in their opening match, responded almost immediately, with Teerapat Pruetong finding space but unable to convert his chance.

The early exchanges set the tone for an open contest, with both sides showing attacking intent but lacking composure in front of goal.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 26th minute. Nathan James clipped Luay inside the penalty area, leaving the referee with little choice but to award a spot-kick. Amoori Faisal stepped up confidently and smashed the ball home.

The second half saw Thailand push forward in search of an equaliser, and their persistence eventually paid off in the 85th minute when Thanawut Phochai combined neatly with Chinngoen Phutonyong, who managed to squeeze his shot past Sajid to level the score.

Thailand U23 head coach Thawatchai Damrong-ongtrakul, admitted his team must sharpen their finishing if they are to progress. He praised their resilience but acknowledged missed opportunities.

“We created several chances after halftime but only converted once. There were mistakes, yet I’m satisfied with the point. We still have a chance to reach the quarter-finals, but we must beat China,” he explained.

Iraq coach Emad Mohammed, expressed pride in his youthful squad, many of whom were born in 2005. He highlighted their effort and ability to blend with the more experienced players despite missing key figures.

“The players gave everything, but we did miss some of our more experienced players. Thailand left openings in defence, but we didn’t always exploit them. We need to refine our tactics and tighten up defensively. A win against Australia will secure our qualification,” he said.

Thailand’s next game is against China tomorrow.
