However, my wife was told by an staffer at the main post office in Phuket Town that we cannot send a tablet to Australia by airmail. Apparently the officer said the airlines would not allow it.
Surely this cannot be true, as airlines even allow passengers to carry tablets into the passenger cabins.
Something is wrong here. DHL has already confirmed that electronics can be sent - and can even give me a scheduled date of delivery to my mother's front door.

Right now, it is impossible to send any electronic devices that contain any batteries overseas by air because of an international aviation agreement.
Airlines do not accept any electronic device that contain batteries to be sent by air. Even some devices that have the battery removed might not pass the airport x-ray machine.
ThaiPost is not only the postal service that is unable to do so. Even DHL or any private express mail carrier cannot provide such a service. I suggest you re-check with DHL to confirm exactly what service they can provide.
