Thale Noi Waterfowl Reserve is a large freshwater lake, a protected haven for hundreds of species of waterfowls, in Phattalung Province.
It was declared as the first non-hunting area in the country as it is an important habitat for more than 187 species of waterfowl and is listed internationally as a wetland of global importance.
The waterside village is a relaxing place to visit or stay for a few days to be among the lotuses, waterfowls and water buffaloes.
Visitors can stay overnight at local resorts located not far from the wetland or stay in five large timber cabins provided by the national park service, many of which stand in the lake. It is essential to book ahead for these lodgings as they are usually booked out, especially at weekends and long public holidays.
Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn has a timber palace there, also built on the lake.
A good time to visit Thale Noi is between October to March when there is abundance of birdlife and pink lotuses cover the lake in full bloom.
From Phuket it’s a 300-kilometre drive to Phattalung Province in a car. Buses leave often from the bus terminal in Phuket Town to Trang or Had Yai. Get off at Tha Miram outside Phattalung town for a minibus trip of 32 kilometres to the destination.
Thale Noi (small sea in Thai) has become popular with both Thai and foreigners. Residents in that close-knit village know each other well and love to welcome guests almost as family members.
Village life starts early morning when men head out on their long-tailed boats. Fishermen dip their square nets for the morning catch from the lake while stallholders cook and sell cheap noodles with fish curry and fish nuggets. The women weavers of reed mats, bags or baskets start their work early in the cooler morning hours.
Visitors can rent boats for B400-500 to go bird-watching and cruising on the lake in groups or individually. Or just relax under the roof near the lake with a good book, to find that peace that you seek on your holiday.
To end a relaxing day, cycle to a bridge which links Thale Noi with the Ranote watershed of Songkla Province, to enjoy the sunset and see water buffaloes swim near the bridge.
Thale Noi Waterfowl Reserve Office is in Phanang Tung Sub-district, Khuan Khanun district, Phattalung Province. Tel 074 685 230.
