According to the announcement, traffic through the underpass will be closed nightly from 8pm to 6am the following morning while crews carry out work as part of the ‘Smart City’ underpass improvement project.
The project includes the removal of the old lighting system and installation of a new electrical system equipped with a remote power outage notification system.
Officials will also install license plate recognition cameras and upgrade existing traffic signs to internet-connected variable message signs to improve traffic management and monitoring capabilities.
The Phuket Highways Office explained that the work is part of efforts to establish a remote control and monitoring centre to improve the efficiency and safety of Phuket’s smart city tunnel infrastructure.
The overnight closures come as the Samkong Underpass also faces overnight closures while for a full electrical system repair as part of the same Smart City upgrade programme.
Those works began last Saturday (May 23) and will also continue nightly until Sunday (May 31), with the underpass closed each night from 8pm to 6am.
Motorists are advised to avoid the underpasses during the closure hours and use alternative routes where possible.
The Phuket Highways Office apologised for any inconvenience caused.
