The latest agreement follows a meeting on Monday (August 11) in which Club Med had initially agreed to allocate three rai for a public development upon renewing its lease with the OrBorJor next year.

As agreed in that meeting, Phuket Provincial Administration Organization (OrBorJor) Chief Paiboon Upasating, along with Karon administrators and representatives from Club Med inspected the 36-rai site on Saturday (August 16) morning, to discuss what the public space development might be.

The OrBorJor has leased the prime seaside plot of land to Club Med since 1985, and the 30-year lease is due to expire in September next year.

Club Med representative and coordinator Mr Wijit Dasanthad said that Club Med is prepared to cover all construction costs for the proposed development, which was agreed among members of the inspection team would be (themed) “the lung of Karon … a green space ... for residents of Karon and Phuket to exercise and play sports.”

The development is central to the negotiations for the lease renewal, which has been agreed at a cost to Club Med of B27 million per year for just three years.
