“They visited us on Patong Beach, to meet our 26 lifeguards and our 26 volunteers,” Somprasong Saengchat of the Phuket Lifeguard Service (PLS), who serves as the chief lifeguard at Patong Beach, told The Phuket News.

“We talked about our duty working as lifeguards, our company (PLS), our lifesaving experience, dangerous areas for people to swim, and problems there have been in hiring us, including problems with the budget being provided,” Mr Somprasong explained.

“He also asked me to help Chinese tourists much as we can, and he said thank you for the lives we have already saved,” he added.

Mr Somprasong expressed his gratitude to the people he works with as lifeguards.

“I really want to say thank you to all 26 lifeguards and the volunteers who support the Phuket Lifeguard Service team on the beach.

“They help us so much to look after tourists. Tourists need lifeguards to save their lives,” Mr Somprasong said.

After the inspection at Patong Beach this morning, the Chinese delegation spent this afternoon at a meeting in Phuket with top-ranking provincial officials in Phuket Town to discuss safety and other issues directly concerning Chinese nationals.

The Chinese would be better off if they hired, trained, and placed their own Chinese speaking lifeguards on the beaches to protect their country's tourists. Unfortunately, the Thais cannot be trusted to keep their word, do the right thing and they certainly cannot communicate in the Chinese language.

More Chinese drowning deaths here than from any other country. Your news stories that I logged last year recorded 14 of 27 drownings being Chinese - no wonder they're worried. The Thais aren't though.

Pity that the chinese embassy delegation not went unannounced on her own to visit all Phuket beaches.
Than they got a true picture of the Phuket beach safety situation.
Now they were fooled by thai officials with a show picture.
With figurants in news Life guard outfit, smelling fresh from the shop shell.

One wonders if they were aware of the LACK of coverage at other beaches? Nope- I thought not.

Nice PR stunt though.

Astounding! Where did all these lifeguards come from? I read that Patong was not covered by the new contractt. All a great show to keep the Chinese happy and the coffers full. No mention of the many Chinese deaths every week
