Police were called to the home, in Soi Hua Tiao in Moo 3, Cherng Talay, at about 12:50pm.
In the backyard was the body of Somnuek Suebsin, 79, with a gunshot wound behind his right ear. Beside his body was a .38-calibre Smith & Wesson revolver still loaded with four bullets.
Mr Somnuek’s grandson, Putthinan Sueksa, 23, said he had spoken with his grandfather only minutes earlier. He called him to ask him to join him to eat. Mr Somneuk told him to go see his aunt.
Still wanting his grandfather to join him, Mr Putthinan returned to the house to find his grandfather’s body in the backyard. Mr Putthinan then called the police.
Mr Somneuk’s daughter, Pimpan Suebsin, 47, lived in the same house with her father. She was at work when his body was found. Ms Pimpan said she last spoke with Mr Somneuk in the morning. She noticed nothing unusual about him. He spoke normally, she said.
At his age, Mr Somneuk was known to be suffering several conditions, such as blood clots in the lungs, heart issues and high blood pressure. However, his family knew of no dire or critical medical issues, though they noted her rarely spoke about personal matters.
The family believes Mr Somneuk shot himself, though they have no idea what had prompted him to do so, police noted in their report.
Forensics officers have inspected the scene and handed over evidence collected at the scene.
Mr Somneuk’s body was transported to a hospital while police continue their investigation.
