Police were called to the scene, the ‘Reua-bai’ (‘Sailboat’) noodle shop, located next to the Mini Big C halfway from Chalong Circle to Kata Hill, at about 3:30pm.
Officers and firefighters from Chalong Municipality responded to the call and were able to contain the blaze within 20 minutes.
By that time the kitchen had suffered extensive damage.
No people were reported injured from the fire.
The fire started in the kitchen behind the two-story commercial building, which serves as both a residence and a restaurant, police explained.
According to the shop owner, Saifon Boonwan, 40, the Myanmar employee at the restaurant forgot to turn off the gas after frying an egg, which led to the fire.
At last report, police and firefighters were continuing their investigation to confirm the cause of the fire and assess the extent of the damage.
