Phuket City Police were alerted to the accident at about 10pm.
Officers arrived along with rescue workers from the Phuket Kuslodharm Foundation to find the silver Toyota Camry sedan stuck in mud in the large hole, excavated to install large drains beside the Lotus’s shopping mall.
The front of the car had struck large concrete drains already installed in the bottom of the metres-deep pit.
The three people inside the car had suffered minor injuries only, rescue workers confirmed.
Police reported that the driver, unnamed in their report, was unfamiliar with the road.
The driver had only just arrived in Phuket to start work and was “not used to driving this route”, police said.
