Phuket City Police were informed of the accident, near the intersection of Phang Nga Rd and Surin Rd, at 1:55am.

Police and emergency responders arrived to find the car, a black Toyota Altis registered in Bangkok, crashed into the power pole.

A large fire had started in the engine bay, with flames reaching more than a metres from the car.

Security guards from the nearby Shell petrol station had rushed to help douse the fire with fire extinguishers. Their efforts had helped to prevent the fire from spreading, but not before considerable damage had been done to the car.

Firefighters from Phuket City Municipality branch of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) soon arrived and took 20 minutes to have the fire safely extinguished.

The driver of the car, Thanin Khumban, had suffered only minor injuries in the incident.

He received first aid at the scene and then was taken to Phuket City Police Station for questioning while police continue to investigate the accident.
