Under the campaign entitled “Brother helps younger brother”, any surplus equipment, such as life jackets, can be donated directly to the Phuket Regional Harbour Office in Wichit where it will then be passed on to selected recipients who can utilise the equipment.

Natchapong Pranit, Director of the Phuket Regional Harbor Office, received a number of life jackets yesterday that had been used but were still in fine working order, he confirmed.

“Any tourist or passenger boat businesses that have surplus equipment or that may have upgraded their equipment recently are welcome to donate goods to us,” Mr Natchapong said.

“Likewise any operators that may have gone out of business and therefore no longer have any need for the equipment,” he added.

“We will then recycle the equipment and pass it on to those that can use it effectively.”

It is hoped the recycling project can further help water safety standards in Phuket and prevent any loss of life in the event of an accident, Mr Natchapong explained.

Life jackets were donated to two separate groups yesterday. The first recipient was the Cobia Farming Community Enterprise Group at Village 6 in Ban Laem Sai, Thalang District, who received 38 life jackets were donated in a ceremony involving the village headman and a professor representing Prince of Songkla University, Phuket Campus.

The second group to receive a donation was a number of long boat operators at Rawai Beach who received a total of 65 life jackets.
