Maj Gen Osoth Bhavilai, president of the ASEAN Para Sports Federation (APSF), said an official letter has been sent to the tournament organisers to confirm the country’s decision.
National Paralympic Committee of Cambodia secretary-general Yi Veasna stated that due to unforeseen circumstances, the Cambodian athletes are unable to travel to participate in the tournament and he has also expressed regret for the decision, reports the Bangkok Post.
“APSF officially acknowledges the content of the letter and NPC Cambodia’s position. We express our regret for Cambodia’s non-participation in the tournament. At the same time, we affirm our respect for NPC Cambodia’s decision, noting that Cambodia is a valuable member of the ASEAN para sports community and has a significant role in the development and promotion of para sports in the region, including hosting the 12th ASEAN Para Games in Phnom Penh in 2023,” said Maj Gen Osoth.
Despite Cambodia’s withdrawal, APSF confirmed that the 13th ASEAN Para Games will still be held as scheduled, with preparations already in the final stages.
“We are confident that the Games will be successful, safe, inclusive, and of high standards for para-athletes in Southeast Asia,” said Maj Gen Osoth.
Cambodia also pulled out of the 33rd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in December, citing safety concerns arising from the border conflict with hosts Thailand.
