Kathu Police were notified of the theft at about 4pm yesterday (June 8), when 54-year-old Somsak Pengdis reported that valuables had been stolen from a house in Passorn Village, Moo 7, Kathu.
Mr Somsak, the younger brother of the homeowner, told police he had been looking after the property while his sister was living abroad. He explained that he normally visits the house once a week and had gone there to clean the property when he discovered signs of a break-in.
A subsequent inspection revealed that a large quantity of valuables stored in a wardrobe drawer had been stolen.
According to the police report, the missing property included gold bars, gold jewellery, about B2 million in cash and euros with an estimated value of more than B1 million.
The total value of the stolen items is believed to exceed B3 million.
Forensic officers photographed the scene and collected latent fingerprints and other evidence for examination. Investigators are also reviewing CCTV footage from within the village and along routes leading in and out of the area in an effort to identify the suspects.
Police believe the burglars may have targeted the property because it had been left unoccupied for an extended period. The investigation is ongoing.
