Police Lieutenant Colonel Thanom Thongpaen, Inspector of Investigation at Thalang Police Station was notified of the incident around 11:30pm last night and advanced to the secene with colleagues and members from emergency services shortly afterwards.
On arriving at the scene, which happened on the northbound section of Thepkasattri Rd about 50 metres after the Caltex gas station, they discovered a blue BMW sedan car that had crashed into the NTP Motor road side store. The car had a Phang Nga registered number plate but the driver was nowhere to be found.
Nearby officers discovered a badly damaged motorcycle lying on its side and the body of the young man close by. He was pronounced dead by medical staff at the scene. It was not disclosed whether the driver of the motorcycle was wearing a helmet and no details as to his name were provided in police reports.
Following an initial inspection of the scene police officers determined that there had been a collision in the middle lane of the road near the Pa Khrong Chip U-turn, about 100 meters from the location where the body was found.
Police also confirmed they interviewed a Mr Ekaphong Phianphak, who was riding with the deceased boy on a separate motorcycle.
Mr Ekaphong revealed that he and his young friend were heading towards Phuket Town and had made a u-turn on Thepkasattri Rd.
He then explained that after his friend had made the u-turn his bike seemed to splutter and come to a halt in the middle of the road. The boy proceeded to push the bike to the side of the road before the BMW car appeared and collided with him and the bike, dragging both for many metres before coming to a standstill.
Police did reveal that a 40-year-old man called Lieutenant General Mayakarn from Village No. 1, Khok Kloi Subdistrict, Takua Thung District, Phang Nga Province, visited police at Sakhu Police Station shortly after the incident and confirmed he was the peson driving the car when it happened.
At time of press he was still being questioned by authorities who also confirmed a breathliser test had been administered to determine whether any alcohol content was detected.
