Big FAT bungles D2 season start

FOOTBALL: The original start date for the 2016 Thai football season passed on Feb 28, and on Wednesday (Mar 2) Phuket FC President MaAnn Samran went back to Bangkok to again submit papers to the Football Association of Thailand (FAT) to confirm the team’s placing in Southern Region Division 2. This is the third time papers have been presented.

Any team wanting to compete in their respective regional division were required to again present papers confirming their players and the stadium where they will play, along with details regarding ownership of the club, contract information for their coaches and players.

However, it would appear that things are slowly moving along, as at the meeting, chaired by newly elected FAT President Pol Gen Somyot Poompunmuang, it was announced that under a new game plan, Division 2 will now be divided into eight zones, up three from the previous five, and that there will also now be the inclusion of a Division 3.

It was also announced that from the unknown number of teams to compete in Regional Division 2, the first- and second-placed teams of each zone will be entered into a play-off which will lead to three teams being promoted to Yamaha League 1.

However, it was still not decided which teams have actually qualified to play in Division 2 as FAT officials have still to examine all paperwork submitted.

Allegedly, confirmation of team entry into the division will be announced on March 12 along with the start date for the season, but don’t hold your breath.

Those waiting to see the newly formed Andaman Dragon in action won’t have to wait as they will take on Phang Nga FC, also caught up in the fiasco, in a friendly match at Surakul Stadium tonight (Mar 4) with kick off set for 7pm. Entry is free to all.
