Mr Bruton will speak on “Thailand in mid-decade: will the next five years restore political stability and economic prosperity?”

In its announcement of the dinner, the BCCT Phuket explains, “Thailand has experienced nearly two decades of experimentation with different forms of political and economic structures, coups and chaos.

“As a result, we risk falling behind regional competitors in terms of economic growth, political maturity and social harmony. Can the new ‘command economy’ put Thailand back on track and recover momentum?

“This presentation will include conclusions reached during corporate roundtable discussions in Bangkok and Singapore with a range of corporate and non-government organisations.”

Mr Bruton has lived in Thailand for 45 years. He graduated from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), before undertaking postgraduate personnel and language qualifications from the Universities of London, Paris and Malaya.

He has worked in publishing, corporate finance, real estate and mining, as well as carrying out extensive consulting assignments in each of the Mekong Region countries.

He is familiar with life in Southern Thailand, having managed mining operations in Ranong and Nakhon Sri Thammarat and rural development in Prachuab Khiri Khan.

He describes hmself as “a liberal in experience and disposition, confronted by an increasingly illiberal world”.

The dinner takes place at The Amari Phuket on Thursday March 12, from 6:30 to 8:30pm. Tickets for the event cost B850 including three-course dinner and soft drinks. Other drinks are on guest’s own account at B100 net per glass.
