The ‘Jad’ festival, a local variant Buddhist tradition, is observed on the eighth day of the waning moon on the Buddhist lunar calendar. It comes as a precursor to the well-known ‘Duen Sip’ festival (‘Duen Sip’ literally meaning ‘10th month’), which is observed on the 15th day of the waning moon on the Buddhist lunar calendar.

The festival deeply rooted in local culture, and marks a significant merit-making occasion for local people in Phuket.

Residents from Baan Don and surrounding communities, as well as by local businesses and government agencies, this morning marked the occasion with their traditional street procession of self-made effigies, with the procession starting at Wat Thepkrasattri (Wat Baan Don).

The lively procession, which drew its regular crowd, is locally praised as a a testament to the enduring faith and cultural heritage of the local community.

The annual event is organised to preserve and pass down the community’s traditions and Buddhist practices to future generations. It also fosters a strong sense of unity among the participants, who take pride in coming together to uphold their cultural legacy, local residents explained.

The Baan Don community views this day as a vital occasion, with many locals taking time off work to participate in the ceremonies. The event notably sees a significant turnout of women, ranging from young children to the elderly, who join in the celebrations in large numbers.

Participants expressed their appreciation for the event, emphasising the importance of preserving such traditions in a rapidly changing world. They see it as a valuable opportunity for the younger generation to connect with and continue the cultural practices handed down by their ancestors.
