Speaking at a Phuket Provincial Committee meeting at Provincial Hall yesterday (Sept 29), Governor Sophon confirmed that contracts for the project were signed on Friday (Sept 26). The work will be carried out over 210 days to ensure completion within the set timeframe.

The upgrade will focus on installing modern, energy-saving electrical systems and lighting designed to meet national safety standards, Governor Sophon said.

The improved illumination is expected to provide clearer visibility for motorists, reduce the likelihood of accidents caused by dim conditions, and offer long-term savings on energy costs, he added.

Governor Sophon described the initiative as a necessary investment for both residents and visitors.

“This project is not only about maintenance, but also about demonstrating Phuket’s commitment to safe travel and high-quality infrastructure,” he said. “It will help build confidence among locals and tourists that the province takes their safety seriously.”

The rollout of upgraded lighting in the underpasses follows Somkit Kittisopit, Chief of the Phuket Highways Office, both denying and admitting that poor lighting was a major factor in accidents in the underpasses ‒ despite police’s clear confirmation that it is, especially in the accident-heavy Darasamut Underpass.
