Bussaba Yodbangtoey (front row, second from left) is confident Thai competitors will get good results in the competition.

The event had been awarded to Nepal, but those arrangements fell through following the tragic earthquake in the region.

Bussaba Yodbangtoey, president of the Thai Amateur Weightlifing Association, said despite last weekʼs deadly blast at Bangkok's Ratchaprasong intersection, no countries had withdrawn from the tournament.

In fact, the number of participants is higher than expected, she said.

“This shows that foreigners are confident that Thailand is safe,” Ms Bussaba said.

A total of 395 lifters will take part in the tournament at the Saphan Hin Sports Centre.

There are 15 weight classes, eight for men and seven for women.

“Our athletes are ready for the tournament and I am confident that we will get good results,” Ms Bussaba said.

“It is a warm-up tournament ahead of the world championships to be held in the US in November.”

The Thai squad is led by 2012 Olympic silver medallist Pimsiri Sirikaew in the womenʼs 63kg.

The other Thai hopefuls include Sukanya Srisurat and Panida Kamsri.

The tournament will be broadcast live on Channel 6 SD.
