The ever popular event, held at the lake at King Rama X Commemoration Park in Saphan Hin and organised by the Phuket Fishing and Sports Club, witnessed a healthy turnout of more than 150 participants who were competing for over B175,000 in prizes.

There were a total of 32 teams competing in three separate categories: speed boats, motor boats and long-tail boats.

The fishing gear permitted was standard duck rod and unlimited reel – hand line was not permitted – and the standard rules of the international fishing association were implemented and adhered to during competition, which was open to amateurs and professionals alike.

The game fish permitted included organic fish or wahoo fish, barracuda, monk fish, snakehead fish, rainbow fish, snapper fish, tuna, grouper and all kinds of sea bass, except broadmouth fish. Additionally there were three types of special prize fish: Char Grouper, Golden Fish and Amber Jack.

Much of the fish caught was brought ashore before going to auction at reasonable prices, with a portion of the proceeds going to support charitable activities through the Phuket Care Center Foundation.

The annual event aims to promote marine tourism while stimulating the local economy, with Supachok La-ongphet, Phuket Town Mayor, overseeing the award presentation as part of Sunday’s official closing ceremony.
