The American man, identified by officials as Ali Mikail, 36, was taken into custody by Phuket City Police and Phuket Immigration officers in the car park at the Central shopping mall about 11pm last night (May 3).
Mikail was wanted for the assault and theft in Chalong, whcih police said occurred on the night of April 24.
No further details of the incident were reported.
Mikail was able to present to officers his passport, showing he last entered the country on Feb 17.
He was not found to be carrying anything illegal on his person.
