The Culinary Detective: Getting the 9th Degree
Phuket Life
/
Dining
Sunday 30 August 2020 10:30 AM
For those of you who read my culinary column, you will be aware that I was fortunate to visit the 9th Floor in Patong, a legend, not only in terms of quality cuisine but also in its success in what is an undoubtedly far from salubrious part of town, more celebrated for alternative fleshy temptations to the signature boneless Angus short rib available at the former. During my dinner, whilst I did meet the debonair Thomas Brack, who capably runs this outpost, unfortunately, the proprietor, Bart Duykers, was otherwise engaged so I was unable to renew our acquaintance.

When I first started writing this “A Meal with…” column over three years ago, little did I anticipate one day finding myself sitting a well-measured two-plus metres away from my subject, with both of us wearing face masks. However, as what is colloquially termed the ‘Chinese Curse’ has it, we are indeed ‘living in interesting times’ and so we now find ourselves in all sorts of strange situations, doing all sorts of things we never imagined we would.

It has sadly been some time since my last visit to Phuket. Whilst only a matter of weeks, it seems like an eternity! I am fortunate to have a small bolt-hole on the island, fulfilling my ocean-view retirement dream and equally a welcome escape from the hustle of Bangkok where I have been ensconced since mid-March. Daily, I fervently seek news of the airport opening date so I may visit my second home, but more importantly renew experiences at my favourite dining spots.

A beautiful location with stunning views, plus an excellent coffee menu, combine for a picturesque coffee break along the Rawai coast. Rustic and Blue - By The Sea opened in early February. Little sister to the successful Rustic and Blue - The Farm Shop in Chiang Mai, Phuket’s branch has quickly become a local favourite. The atmosphere is charming, the staff welcoming and the menu is entirely fresh and creative.

It goes without saying that the brunch scene in Phuket is over-competitive with a plethora of offerings available every Sunday at various hotels, restaurants and beach clubs. It’s always a big challenge for a new venue to join the game, and thus personally I’m always intrigued to see what a newcomer has on offer to stand out and get the discerning public excited.

Prohibition is Over!

Americans have a special place in their heart, perhaps more accurately in their liver, for the resurgence of the Speakeasy. The Prohibition, a constitutional ban on the production, importation, transportation, and sale of alcohol that lasted from 1920 to 1933 were in fact 13 years of pushback against a government policy of temperance that was rejected wholly by the masses.

The other outlets, perhaps slightly better known to you, are the Japanese Taihei and the heirloom recipe signature Thai restaurant, Saffron.

Saturday 28 December 2019 12:00 PM
Tonight, (Dec 13) is not my first occasion dining at the Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket, having previously enjoyed the rustic Italian dishes offered at the hotel’s La Trattoria, incidentally, well worth a visit. This evening I am to experience Ruen Thai, the hotel’s signature Thai restaurant. The hotel was opened in 1987 and on arriving at the lobby entrance, it has not lost the ambiance of a classic grand dame; perfectly manicured lawns wrap around open air Thai pagodas mixing a neo colonial theme with modern Thai touches. This hotel is a true example of the days when space was not yet at a premium, the lobby and arrival areas are generous. Located in the heart of the Laguna, it has an unrivaled position overlooking the Andaman sea amidst acres of tropical gardens planted with native casuarinas and coconut palms, yet easily navigated through buggies and leisurely cruising along the serene waterways in small shuttle boats.
