Timothée Chalamet revives old magic in ‘Wonka’
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
Often when a film studio dares to touch a film classic in one way or another fans of the original become pretty nervous. A recent trend has been to take a classic film and then create a prequel, sequel or spinoff, but even when it is done as well as ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ in 2018 there are still things that never make it equal to the original. In that case it was the fact that Emily Blunt just never compared to the iconic Julie Andrews.
‘Napoleon’ a Ridley Scott masterclass
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
When it comes to historical epics Ridley Scott is the undoubted king. While not always historically accurate when Scott has tackled movies like ‘Gladiator’, ‘Robin Hood’ or ‘Kingdom of Heaven’, he has always delivered stunning films that leave the audience breathless. Now you can add ‘Napoleon’ to that list as Scott brings the French General’s story to the big screen in a groundbreaking way.
A ‘Thanksgiving’ to scream about
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
The idea for ‘Thanksgiving’ has been floating around in the mind of filmmaker Eli Roth for a long time now. That idea first surfaced back in 2007 when ‘Thanksgiving’ appeared as one of the fake trailers during the ‘Grindhouse’ double feature. Not one to let a good idea slip by, Roth now brings it to life in the form of a feature film.
‘Trolls’ get back together
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
Was ‘Trolls Band Together’ ever supposed to be a feature film? Or was it just a reason for Grammy-nominated boy band NSYNC to reform (albeit temporarily)? Whatever the case, we end up with one of the most colourful films that you will see this year.
Retro ’Hunger Games’ will leave audiences divided
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
For many cinema fans ‘The Hunger Games’ franchise was a reminder that films could be based on young adult fiction but still appeal to a wide audience. Not only were the films within the franchise juggernauts at the box office but they introduced Hollywood to Jennifer Lawrence while Hollywood A-Listers like Stanley Tucci, Lenny Kravitz and Woody Harrelson were lining up for roles.
‘The Marvels’ recaptures that old Marvel magic
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
If the rumours out of Marvel this week are true, then somebody at HQ pulled the emergency lever in fear that Phase Four was becoming a complete failure. News filtered out that two new projects are on the cards – one will see Tobey Maguire’s Spiderman and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine team up and the other bringing back the six original Avengers, somehow finding a way to bring Black Widow and Iron Man back from the dead.
‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’ brings game horror to the big screen
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
One quick look at the trailer for brand-new horror film ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’ and you could be forgiven for wondering what kind of film you were about to experience. The trailer looks quirky – even funny in parts, which is mildly deceptive because the film goes into some territory many will not expect it to.
Effects of Hollywood strike reach Phuket
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
Five films have been released into Phuket cinemas this week, but only one is American and that is a re-release of ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ – a film that was released a decade ago. Yes, the strikes that have been crippling Hollywood’s film industry for the past few months have finally had an effect on cinemas here.
Family fun returns with ‘The Secret Kingdom’
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
One of the things you often hear from parents these days is that the family films of today are nothing like the films they grew up with. Gone are the days of mystical journeys of magic and exploration and instead they have been replaced with epic superhero films that are sometimes even a little questionable for the younger members of the families watching them.
‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ a true epic
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
When director Martin Scorsese decides to work with Leonardo DiCaprio on a project, the result is normally nothing short of spectacular. Together in the past the duo have made screen classics such as ‘Gangs Of New York’, ‘The Aviator’, ‘The Departed’, ‘Shutter Island’ and ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’. Now the pair come together for a seventh time to make the dramatic ‘Killers of The Flower Moon’.
New ‘Exorcist’ film to test true believers
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
In a world where remakes and reboots are now a frequent occurrence in the cinematic sphere it must be acknowledged that filmmakers that take on the task of rebirthing a classic film are taking on a very brave role. Get it wrong and the fans of the original film will launch a hate campaign that could see said filmmaker finding themselves making B or C Grade movies for the rest of their Hollywood career.
‘The Creator’ another milestone for Gareth Edwards
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
When it comes to modern-day filmmakers, director Gareth Edwards is one of the best. His debut feature film, ‘Monsters’, was an underrated cult classic. Since then he has branched into directing in two of the biggest franchises in cinematic history as he helmed 2014’s ‘Godzilla’ and then entered the Star Wars universe with ‘Rogue One’. Some hardcore fans have even said that ‘Rogue One’ is the best of the modern-day Stars Wars films.
‘Mutant Mayhem’ takes Ninja Turtles back to their roots
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
If you are middle-aged then there is a good chance that you grew up watching those green ninjas – the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. When the cartoon series first landed in the 1980s most people thought it would be a fad – then came the clothing, the lunchboxes, the trading cards and eventually the live action movies.
‘A Haunting in Venice’ falls short of Agatha Christie magic
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
There have been very few film franchises over the years that have been as hit or miss as Kenneth Branagh’s Poirot franchise. On one hand his portrayal of the world famous character has been without fault, but sadly each time there has been something that has let down the films themselves.
‘The Nun II’ conjures up a solid sequel
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
One of the most intriguing films of ‘The Conjuring’ universe had to be 2018’s ‘The Nun’. To the cynical it was a film trying to cash in on the popularity of the franchise by delivering a kind of ‘origins’ story to one of the evils that seemed to be haunting Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga – Orphan). But to true fans of the franchise this delivered an interesting backstory and had some interesting ‘reveals’ about the characters in the universe if they were eagle-eyed enough to spot them.
‘Strays’ gets a laugh on
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
Over the past few years the amount of ‘laugh out loud’ comedies that have been released in cinemas has been pretty low. It’s strange given that with the way the world is today what most people probably need to do is laugh – well now the time to laugh has come in the form of director Josh Greenbaum’s (Becoming Bond) brand new comedy ‘Strays’.
Korean epic ‘The Moon’ impresses
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
Disaster movies don’t normally come with a serious storyline. Normally they are films full of amazing special effects, loud noises and people running for their lives. A decent screenplay is normally the last thing on the filmmakers’ minds – but the latest film from South Korean director Kim Young-hwa (Take Off) bucks that trend as it delivers both amazing visuals and a biting screenplay that makes a strong political statement.
‘Gran Turismo’ revs up tale of gamer to real-life racing driver
Phuket Life
/
Phuket Entertainment
Hold the award for most surprising film of 2023 because ‘Gran Turismo’ just took a huge lunge for the chequered flag. You could be forgiven that this would be just a big, dumb action film based on a video game. Certainly, many won’t expect for this to be a film that goes deep into human emotion about achieving your dreams or looking at the psyche that it takes to be a car racer… yet that is exactly what the film manages to do.
‘Simulant’ more real than meets the eye
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
It is sometimes strange how a good film can seem to magically appear out of thin air. With very little publicity many could assume that April Mullen’s (‘Wander’) ‘Simulant’ may not be worth the price of admission. But that assumption would be wrong because this turns out to be one of the most unusual and underrated films of 2023.
Filmed off Phuket, ‘The Meg’ returns
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
One of the most underrated films to have been released over recent years had to be 2018’s ‘The Meg’. This action-packed juggernaut did everything expected of it and more, yet for some reason was quickly forgotten by audiences. The question that left everybody asking was – what exactly did people expect from a film that was largely Jason Statham versus a huge shark?
