At the Saphan Hin Sports Centre, where conscription for Mueang District is being conducted, the atmosphere has remained lively as eligible men report for screening, deferment requests and voluntary enlistment.

During the selection session on Sunday (Apr 5), 123 men passed physical examinations, exceeding the district’s conscription quota of 53.

Of those, 15 men volunteered for military service and one was granted exemption, leaving 37 required to take part in the lottery system. All 37 subsequently drew red cards, meaning they will be required to undertake compulsory military service. A further 86 men drew black cards and were exempted.

The ballot draw, a defining feature of Thailand’s conscription process, drew large crowds of family members and supporters, with cheers and visible relief accompanying each black card drawn, while those receiving red cards were offered encouragement.

Officials noted particularly strong turnout from families in Ratsada, where many gathered to closely follow the results.

Many loud cheers were heard when young men drew a black card, exempting them from military service.

Conscription activities continued today (Apr 7), including sessions for men from Karon and Wichit subdistricts.

Authorities described the overall process as smooth and well-organised, crediting cooperation between officials and the public.

Conscription in Thailand requires men aged 21 and over to report for selection. Those who draw a red card must serve in the military, while those drawing black cards are exempt.

Men may apply for deferment under certain conditions, including to complete their education. Failure to comply with conscription procedures can result in fines or imprisonment.

Officials confirmed that conscription events in Phuket will continue through to Apr 12.
