27 test positive for drugs at Phuket Check points

PHUKET: 27 people tested positive for drugs at check points set up in in Thalang last night (March 16). One man was also caught with one litre of kratom juice.

Thalang District Chief, Veera Kerdsirimongkol ordered officials from Thalang stability branch and 30 volunteers to set up two security check points in Thalang and search for any drugs and illegal activities.

Between 5-9pm, officials set up a check point at Baan Prusomparn in Thepkasattri. Officials stopped all incoming and outgoing vehicles and gave random drug tests. Out of 103 people tested for drugs at this check point 22 tested positive.

One man was found to have one litre of a kratom leaf concoction in the car and was taken to Thalang police station to be charged with possession of a Category 5 drug.

Then, between 9:30-11:45pm, another check point was set up on the road in front of the 7-11 in Baan Maeng Mai Moo 5 in Thepkasattri. 60 people were stop and tested for drugs, five tested positive.

In total 163 people were tested last night and 27 people tested positive.

Officers took records of those who tested positive and sent their urine samples to the Phuket Medical and Science Centre to confirm drugs had been taken.

Although the 27 were released, they must attend drug rehabilitation within the time specified by the police or face criminal charges.
