25 people arrested in anti-crime campaign in Phuket

PHUKET: Four women and 21 men were arrested in Patong last night (May 8) as police carried out the anti-drug and crime campaign.

Kathu police led by Lt Suthichai Tienpo surrounded the area of a number of rented rooms in Soi Paradise after receiving a tip off from undercover police.

Four Burmese (Kiew Yeh, Zharn, Minn, Rakai) and one Thai man (Jakkapan) were arrested for possession of kratom leaves.

In the same area police also nabbed six Burmese (Winn Linn, Toe, Tun, Mou, Nay, Pew) and two Thai men (Julanon and Monchai) for cooking kratom leaves. Police seized kratom leaves, kratom cocktail, a pot, a scale, as well as cough syrup from them.

Five of the 21 men in possession of kratom leaves are facing the charge of illegal possession of Category 5. Another eight men are facing the charge of producing kratom cocktail without permission.

As police swooped through the area, three Thai women (Uthairat, Rawiwan, Winee), two Thai men (Denchai and Sakda), and one Burmese man (Pai Tu) were also arrested with 2.77 grams of crystal meth.

One woman, Malika Kaitong, was found in possession of 1.45 grams of marijuana. Six people are currently facing the drug charge of Category 1, while Malika is facing the charge of Category 5.

One Thai man, Thanit Thonggoppakoon, found in possession of three shotgun shells (12 gauge), three 9mm bullets, and six .38-calibre bullets, is currently facing the charge of illegal possession of ammunition.

In another address in the same area, police arrested three Thai and one Burmese for illegal gambling. They were formally named as Somkid Prapoesri, 38, who was the dealer, Chatri Ratchpibul, 42, Tinakorn Hirankam, 47, and Htay Win Khen, 34 (Burmese). All four are being held for illegal gambling and police also seized B100 and a gamble device.

All 25 people were taken to Kathu police station to face their charges.
