BREAKING: Scores of students injured as tour guide training group bus flips, rolls off road north of Phuket

The incident happened at aproximately 8.30am this morning in Kok Kloi sub district, in Phang Nga's Ta Kua Thung district, on the bypass road to Phang Nga Town, about five kilometres north of Sarasin Bridge, the bridge connecting Phang Nga and Phuket provinces.

The driver of the bus was named as Mr Tanapon Prakobmit, 32, of Nakhon Ratchasim, who gave report to Pol Maj Suttipong Rodsong of Kok Kloi Police that the bus load of 35 passengers were students training to obtain tour guide licensure.

The bus had departed Katina Hotel in Phuket this morning and was en route to temples in Krabi province when the accident happened.

"The driver said that there was a problem with the front wheels, causing him to zig zag on the road and he wasn't able to control the bus, which hit a rubber tree, before rolling off the road," said Pol Maj Suttipong.

It is understood that of the 35 passengers, 18 were taken to Ta Kua Thung Hospital and no casualties have been reported at the time of press.

*UPDATE: Driver charged with reckless driving, meth pipe found in wreckage.

How many more are injured or killed on these coaches & minibuses. It is either driver error or vehicle maintenance or a combination of both! I stopped travelling on minibuses for Visa runs 3 years ago as the drivers made no allowance for weather or road conditions. Foot down & flat out is the only way they know how to drive!

A very special day for the 35 tour guide students.
'Practical student lesson' in how busses are doing on and around Phuket.
The students have learned now at first hand to check out the bus drivers, and the last technical maintenance report of the bus before starting the bus trip.
Today no wet slippery road, brakes ok, but a 'zig zag' story.

Wonder or the driver was immediately checked on drugs/alcohol.

Thats what happens what happens when you use old broken buses to save money. Most countries these things will not be allowed on the road at all. I hope all get well soon as then they can see the problems first hand. These students want to make things better that is why they are in training. Now they can hopefully make a full recovery and also help make massive changes to the safety of tourists and locals alike, as many accidents include locals too as innocent people going about their normal lives.

Please acknowledge tour bus drivers must undergo special training and are issued special licences to drive tour buses. Also, please have routine and regular yearly tests of the tour buses. Lastly, would the Thai Police please stop the buses more often to inspect the driver's licence and check the buses, tires, braking system, etc. Thank you.
