Vive la France!

For those that don’t know, Bastille Day is celebrated on July 14 each year. Bastille Day is the French national holiday and represents the beginning of the French Revolution. The storming of the Bastille (a prison) by the French people in 1789, signified a shift in power for the country towards a democracy. The monarchy in France was later officially abandoned in 1870.

In France, Bastille Day is formally called La Fête Nationale. The oldest and largest regular military parade in Europe is held on the morning of 14 July, on the Champs-Élysées in Paris in front of the President of the Republic, along with other French officials and foreign guests.

There are over 1,000 officially registered French citizens in Phuket, but the French embassy estimates the actual number to be around double that – almost all of whom will be celebrating Bastille Day on the day in the inimitable French fashion, with pride, flair and a joie de vivre.

There are a number of celebrations on the day, including an event hosted by UFE (Union Français de l’Étranger) at Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket. Celebrations will begin at 6pm.
