Unidentified 'Burmese labourer' in ICU after self-incineration attempt

PHUKET: An unidentified man, measuring between 175 and 180 cm tall, and thought to be a Burmese labourer between the age of 25 and 30, is being monitored closely in ICU after soaking his body with benzine and burning himself alive, police said.

Police said that the man's face and body are unrecognizable from the incident, which happened today (February 19) in front of a factory in Rassada.

Witnesses who saw the incident were unable to identify the man or his motive, but could only relay that he had did not show any signs of pain or suffering as he burned.

Eventually, passersby were able to extinguish the fire as help was called.

Police speculate that it was a case of attempted suicide due to heartbreak or other personal problem, but it remains unclear how they reached such a conclusion, let alone determined his age, nationality and occupation, being that noone yet has provided any clue as to who hemight be and what his motive was.

Nonetheless, the investigation is ongoing but police said there is a high probability of the victim succumbing to a fatal infection.
