Thousands turn out for Pian’s funeral

Thousands of mourners turned out on Saturday (October 18) to pay their final respects to former Patong Mayor Pian Keesin, at his cremation at the Laem Phet Temple in Patong.

Politicians, local government officials and residents went to the funeral. Vice-Governor Somkiet Sangkhaosutthirak helped to organise the ceremony.

Mr Pian died unexpectedly on October 7 from a massive heart attack. The Vietnam War veteran and former mayor, who was 72 when he died, was found by his driver in the bathroom of his Rassada residence.

An autopsy later showed that the controversial leader had been suffering from heart problems.
Pian Keesin was born on February 12, 1942, in Patong, the son of Kim and Joy Keesin. It was a large family; there were six boys and girls.

He served as a soldier in Nakhon Sri Thammarat from 1965 to 1967 before being posted to Vietnam, where he served in the war against North Vietnam from 1967 to 1969.

In 1972 he married Srikam Chaisri and they in turn had six children – Prammada, Pattawee, Prechawut, Pagrit and Pamuth Keesin, and Sanit Tengkowprasert.

From 1974 to 1993 he served as the elected village head of Kathu and in 1993 he was elected Kamnan of Patong, in which post he received gold awards in three successive years as best kamnan in the province.

In April 1994, after the creation of elected municipalities and OrBorTor he was elected Mayor of Patong, a post he held until October 2001, and then again from June 2004 to July 2012, and from September 2012 to March 2014.
