Thai youth sailing champs eye Asian Beach Games gold in Phuket

Thai youth team who recently won the world Optiworlds 2014 competition in Argentina will join the Asian Beach Game in Phuket with gold on their minds.

In the sailing competition, classes are divided into three categories: Hobie (non-limit ages), Laser and Optimist (under 15).

"We expected to get the goal medal for Hobie 16 Open which using Catamaran. And Optimist, we recently won the world championship in Argentina for team racing and we got second for the single racing," Lt Somkiet Poonpat, head coach of yacht racing association of Thailand told The Phuket News.

"I have been back to Thailand since November 2, then we came to Phuket for the Asian Beach Game," he said, "Our teams are from Sattahip in Chon Buri and they are descendants of Navy (sea men)."

"We expect one of the three medals in each type, because in Asia, the best two in windsurfing are Malaysia and Singapore which are very strong and we should not overlook, but we are ready to grab the medals," he added.

The Sailing and Windsurfing events takes place from Monday (Nov 16) to Thursday (Nov 20) on the waters off Karon Beach. For official times, scores and more information, visit phuketthaila2014.com
