Bang Tao is home to one of the best known Muslim communities in Phuket. The Islamic dishes that have become well known to other groups of people are usually only sold in the morning. Local breakfast options include Khao Mok Gai (yellow rice with steamed chicken) and Roti-Gaang (Sada roti served usually with goat curry, but also with chicken or beef).
The first dish, Khao Mok Gai, is very famous among Thai people as it can be found easily in normal Thai restaurants and local food vendors.
The key to the unique taste is the yellow jasmine rice, which is combined with fragrant Indian spices. It is served with a cut of moist, flavourful chicken, also steamed with many kinds of spices.
Khao Mok Gai is topped with deep fried shallots that give a sweet and salty taste with a crispy texture. There is also a cup of green sour-and-spicy sauce served with the dish for those who want to add even more colour and flavour to the meal.
The second dish is not as well known as Khao Mok Gai but is worth tasting. The fresh made roti (already tasty by itself) is enhanced by a side of goat curry for dipping. This ‘Gaang’ contains many spices used in Indian-style cuisine. The texture is quite thick and enhances the taste of the tender goat meat which is topped with ginger to perfectly balance out the taste.
