Mr Vorasit, scion of the giant Bangkok-based property developer, Charn Issara, and managing director of the Sri Panwa property development and hotel in Phuket, was apparently out with a group of friends at the Rachada night club in the Phoonpol area of town, an after-hours place that attracts people working in night clubs and bars.

What sparked the fight, at around 4am, is not clear, but Mr Vorasit was stabbed in the stomach and back, and had to be rushed to the Bangkok Hospital, Phuket. This afternoon he was listed in a stable condition.

Police have interviewed some 20 witnesses and have visited the club. Phuket Police Commander Pol Maj Gen Chonasit Wattanavrangkul said investigators believe they know who stabbed Mr Vorasit and expect to make an arrest imminently

He added that the Rachada Club will be investigated to see whether it was breaking licensing laws covering hours of operation.

Known for his good humour and charm, Mr Vorasit was, until he married in July last year, among Thailand’s most eligible bachelors.
