So if you’re planning to celebrate this time of year with all of these traditional delights (and let’s face it who could really imagine a Russian feast without them), then this is the perfect place to ensure you’ve got it all covered. From Russian salads to diced potatoes to vegetables to eggs, crab salad, herring in shuba-coat, or perhaps some ham dressed with mayonnaise – you can find all of these in Gastronom.
The restaurant is a small cosy space with a couple of tables so you can either have something to eat here, or get it to take away. All of the salads are authentic and taste homemade, which is astonishing considering the fact that all of the dishes are cooked by three local ladies.
Interestingly enough, instead of herring, there is bonito in the ‘shuba-coat’ but you can hardly distinguish it. It’s tender and melts in your mouth almost as though it was whipped up by a Russian grandmother.
Aside from the salads there is also fresh-made soup every day – borsch with sour cream or beef and chickpea. You can also find cutlets, chicken fillet and other kinds of meat.
Everything is cooked, so you just need to warm it up.
And don’t forget about desserts, it’s a heaven for anyone with a sweet tooth. If you are Russian, it wouldn’t be surprising if you went for the pastry that’s called ‘potato’, but it has nothing in common with this vegetable, other than the shape.
It’s sweet and has a soft sponge cake base, reminding Russians of their childhood when it seemed to be the most popular choice of spread that any pastry shop would offer.
You can also find other Russian favourites such as the cake that’s named after Czech Republic’s capital, ‘Prague’ cake.
If you’re a fan of chocolate desserts you should really try one of these desserts, you won’t regret it and will enjoy it no matter where your homeland is.
All of the dishes are more than affordable. For instance, one slice of cake will cost you no more than B75.
You will also find some authentic Russian pickles, squash spread and bottled sunflower oil there.
The owners of the Gastronom also run a Russian restaurant called Wonderfood in Paklok, be sure to check out the baked porkling or duck on Fridays and Saturdays.
