Semi-trailer slides backward on Patong Hill

PHUKET: A 24-wheeled truck and trailer loaded with construction materials from Bangkok slid sideways while braking after failing to climb Patong Hill this morning (Nov 11), leaving rush-hour commuters stuck on the hill, praying the truck would not slide backwards any further.

The incident happened at about 5am, explained Lt Surapong Pungprom of the Kathu Traffic Police.

“The truck was still there when I came on duty at 7am,” he told The Phuket News.

“There were lots of motorbikes and cars keeping clearing of the truck, and trying to slowly make their way past it,” he said.

A cement truck was called in to help tow the semi-trailer up the hill, Lt Surapong explained.

Traffic was finally cleared by 8am.

“I checked and the truck was not overweight,” Lt Surapong said.

“I questioned the driver, and the problem was that he had no experience driving in Phuket and had never driven over this hill before. The truck simply was not powered up to climb the hill on the bend,” he added.

“Luckily no people were injured and no other vehicles were damaged,” Lt Surapong said.

Concerned: For building tunnel through mountain to connect kathu with patong is very different of just making a simple underpass what takes already 3 years.
For such a tunnel project you need German/Swiss/Italian engineering.

Germany in the passed did build a highway near Don Muang Airport and had to wait 30 (!) years before Thailand did pay the bill!
The bill was paid by Thailand after Germany chained by court order a Thai aircraft at Munich airport.
So, now hard to find foreign construction consortiums to drill that Patong tunnel.

With or without a Tunnel al the Busses who have to bring tourists and staff to the Hotels Restaurants Shops also al the trucks fit or unfit with supplies of food goods etc will try to get to Patong somehow which has become a big City. - So the only solution will be to build a save way to Patong which is in my opinion a Tunnel so done in step hill or mountains countries to provide safe passage for the benefit of all
Better be save then sorry

Concerned:'A tunnel will help assure unfit vehicles and inexperienced steep hill drivers will arrive save in Patong.'
With respect, all that means is that Patong drivers have to deal with these vehicles & bad drivers. Problem not solved.

For a Tunnel
Secure way to Patong
How many more ancients have to happen over the hill to Patong which most likely would not happen if there would be a tunnel?
A tunnel will help assure unfit vehicles and inexperienced steep hill drivers will arrive save in Patong
Block and don’t allow unfit truck busses and vehicles over the hill
Finance the Tunnel with like they do in Bangkok the Highways Expressways toll
PS Reading this still remembering when a few years ago in the same curve an old truck came backwards down the hill during rush hours, lucky enough hi didn’t hit us, had some elderly friends on vacation on the way to Patong they were quite shocked.

Great story. Drivre never experienced Patong Hill, and the truck was not powered.
No need to write more.
Up to next stupid Patong Hill happening.
Thank you, RTP, for not preventing this.

Repeat-repeat-repeat. And Phuket authorities never learn of it.
