Sam Kong Underpass ready within two weeks, project chief hopes

PHUKET: The leading project engineer for the construction of the Sam Kong Underpass hopes to complete the project within two weeks, weather permitting.

“The project has been delayed again due to recent heavy rain, and we pushed back the opening date to the end of August,” Chalermpon Wongkietkun, Project Engineer from the Highways Department told The Phuket News this morning (Aug 19).

“If work is not disrupted any further by heavy rain or floods, we should hit our August 31 deadline,” he said.

Workers this week opened the northbound slip road onto Phra Phuket Kaew Rd, which heads west into Kathu, after resurfacing the road there.

“Motorists can use the side road to turn left onto Phra Phuket Kaew Rd and make a u-turn if they want to continue head north toward the airport,” Mr Chalermpon.

“We have posted a sign by the northbound lanes of the bypass road to let people know they can go use the side road,” he added.

However, Mr Chalermpon pointed out that many motorists have been entering the side road from the northern end and ‘ghost driving’, travelling against the flow of traffic, in order to reach their destination.

“We still have problems with motorists driving in the wrong direction in this area,” Mr Chalermpon said.

“We have posted a ‘Do not enter’ sign at northern end of the side road sign to stop motorists from driving the wrong way there. We put these signs up for safety reasons, so please obey them.

“Do not drive in the wrong direction along these roads or remove our road barriers so you can drive into the construction area.

“Many times we have been blamed when people doing this have got into accidents or had their vehicles damaged by road debris at the construction site, so please obey traffic laws for your own safety,” he said.

Yes Chalong Tunnel Rat.
The contractor who build Samkong underpass is already 'working' on Chalong underpass since end October 2015.
But until now only drain renewing is going on.
Houses and shops around Chalong circle still have to be bought from owners to create construction space.
Guess we are optimistic if Chalong underpass will be completed in 2020.

Slippery snake, 100% correct but who was it who said that he couldn't prevent people killing themselves? The police chief? If only they would listen to someone, but no, they know it all yet know nothing!! A true example of arrogance! Maybe in 30 years they'll finally decide to do something?

Deadlines have become meaningless, just get on with it and finish it ! Put us out of our misery !

Is there any truth to the fact the contractor responsible for Samkong is the same one awarded the contract at Chalong ? If so, with such a poor track record, is there no chance that the contract be cancelled for cause, and the contract re awarded to a more technically and resource enabled contractor, such as the one that completed Central and current working at the bypass intersection........ Wow ! Time to wake up, what was i thinking ? Common sense and civic duty are in short supply around here.

I fear for my sanity if we have to endure another decade of road works at Chalong !

Ceiling, walls, road surfacing and lights in underpass not yet done as in underpass beside Central festival.
They never fix that in 11 days with the very few workers we see there.
Who are they fooling with their opening date?
How many opening dates were already 'broadcasted'?
And now just announced...HOPE...

And if they have problems with ghost riders, call the police and the Phuket Highway Dept!
Does this thai project chief not knows that just signs and 'please' not work on Phuket with thai people?

If they just fined every motorbike which drove through underpass beside Central Festival until today a 1000 thb fine, than the underpass paid itselves already.
( As a matter of speaking.)

Why thai authorities keep a blind eye for the fact that law enforcement ( fines, confiscating cars/motorbikes , can be bought back after procedures) can bring in a huge amount of money for the Government?
Just by law enforcement only. What is wrong on Phuket?

"so please obey traffic laws for your own safety" !!! hahahaha
Do any Thais obey any traffic laws ? run red lights, drive wrong way down one way streets, not wear helmets, drink & drive..... It's no wonder Thailand has the second worse road deaths in the world !!!
