Russian diver dies after car bursts into flames in Wichit

PHUKET: A Russian national, 20, died instantly when the car he was driving caught on fire on Khao Kad Rd in Wichit earlier today.

Wichit Municipality officials were notified that a car had caught on fire on Khao Kad Rd at 3.10pm today (Oct 23).

At the scene, police and rescue workers found a badly damaged Toyota SUV with a dead body inside. The deceased was later identified as a 20-year-old Russian national (not 27 as reported before), who worked as a diving instructor for a local dive centre. Diving equipment was also found in the car which was destroyed by fire.

Police believe the driver died instantly. The victim's body has been taken to Vachira Hospital.

The name of the victim is being withheld until his family members are notified. No third party damage or injuries have been reported.

Pol Lt Phatcharee Wongboon, Deputy Investigator at Wichit Police Station, said that the car was equipped with LPG tanks but it is yet to be determined what caused the fire. Police are continuing their investigation.
