Speaking to the press, DLT Director-General Therapong Rodprasert stressed that the claims that old driver licences will be rendered officially obsolete are false and he urged the public to refrain from sharing misinformation online.
Mr Therapong said that motorists can replace their old paper licences with the current plastic credit card style licenses at any time for a processing fee of B100.
Speaking to The Phuket News, Jaturong Kaewkasi, from the Phuket Land Transport Office reiterated that the old style licences are still valid in Phuket.
“There are a lot of people in Phuket who hold the old paper driving licence and these are still valid. We stopped issuing the paper licences some time ago and replaced them with the plastic cards.
“However, it is up to the licence holder whether they want to change their old licence for the new one.
“The only differences between the old and new licences are that the old ones do not have the holder's details in English like the new ones. And also, the new cards are also valid in neighbouring countries whilst the old ones aren't,” he said.
