Revamped Laguna Phuket Golf Course set to open

GOLF: It's taken nearly two years but renovations on the Laguna Phuket Golf Club are finally complete and golfers will be able to hit the links this Sunday (January 11).

Some of the new unique features include wood ties on steep fairway edges and traditional Thai fishing boats placed in watercourses. Course designer Paul Jansen says these visual elements have enhanced memorability and character.

“If nothing else, they will certainly be talking points,” Jansen says.

Laguna Phuket management have scheduled a press conference for this Sunday (January 11) with a golf clinic to follow at 11am. The ceremonial “opening tee shot” is expected to take place shortly before noon with a full day of golfing slated to begin exactly at 12pm.

Jansen, who created Laguna Phuket's award-winning sister course in Vitenam, says the layout retains much of its former character and appeal but has been dramatically improved aesthetically and strategically.

“The opening hole has been designed to take advantage of the multitude of features on this parcel of land,” he explains. “We moved the tee to sit hard up against the water body, bonding the right side of the hole and bringing the water more into play.”

Jansen says the new 10th hole (formerly the first) has been repositioned to the right, with new undulations adding considerable interest.

“Although only 321 yards from the back tee, an accurate tee shot is required to attack a difficult green complex bounded by humps and bumps with water behind. Whether from the tee, on the fairway or near the green, golfers should use the ground as much as possible to “positively” propel the ball towards the target.”

Back in July, the front nine holes (formerly the back nine) were opened for golfers to try out a few of the new features ahead of the full opening this month.

In addition to the course renovations, the club also includes refurbished locker rooms, an expanded pro shop and extensive new practice facilities staffed by PGA-accredited professionals.
