The main vote to elect members of parliament is scheduled to take place a week from today (February 2).
But three polling stations were to have opened today to allow Phuket people who will not be here next Sunday to mark their mark, and for people from other provinces living in Phuket to do the same.
At 6 this morning, preparing to blockade the polling stations, a leader of the People's Democratic Reform Committee in Phuket, Thanongsak Songpet, told The Phuket News, "We are not going to stop or coerce voters, but we will make clear our opposition to the pre-election.
"I don't think anyone will come to vote today." In fact, one person turned up and voted at the Thalang polling booth. But that was it.
Then, just before nine, Mr Thanongsak called back, elated, "The Election Commission [in Phuket] just canceled the pre-election five minutes ago.
"No one has turned up to vote anyway. There was just us with our whistles."
The cancellation of the pre-election also means the cancellation of the ban on sales of alcohol.
