Monks at a small temple near Promthep Cape discovered the babe at about 8am after collecting alms, reported Rawai Municipality rescue worker Nattapol Kaewpraju
Upon arrival, Mr Nattapol and his team were led to the area where they found the baby, with light skin and black hair and estimated to be five days old.
The baby was wrapped in a red cloth inside a rice cooker box.
“The baby has a small bite on his body, possibly from an ant, but overall he is healthy,” Mr Nattapol told The Phuket News.
Vachira Phuket Hospital was notified and quickly dispatched a team of medical staff to pick up the baby for examination, he added.
“No one knows who left the newborn here, but police are now checking CCTV in the area to find the person that left the baby in the area so they can bring that person in for questioning,” Mr Nattapol said.
