It goes without saying that accidents are not uncommon. Each year, officials trot out their standard safety warning, and each year children and adults are rushed to hospital for injuries to fingers, hands, faces and eyes for burns sustained by a wayward incendiary.
The people injured are always ordinary people – parents, teens and children – never the expert fireworks technicians, which raised the question of whether or not non-experts should have such easy access to such fireworks.
To this, The Phuket News asked readers, “Should fireworks be sold to the public?”
Of those who voted, 28% responded “Yes, but the size and types of fireworks should be graded so that only adults can buy the more dangerous ones.”
However, 16% responded, “Yes, but only adults should have the right to buy and set off any fireworks.”
A clear majority of respondents voiced their opinion that only experts should have access to firewroks – or they should be banned entirely.
Respectively, 40% of those who took part in the poll voted, “No, only people who can prove they’re certified to work with fireworks should be able to buy them”.
A further 16% voted, “No, fireworks should be banned entirely; they are too noisy and their materials pose a security risk.”
