However, official statistics for the close of Day 4 of the campaign, which ended at midnight last night (Apr 14), show only one death – that of a Swedish motorbike rider who crashed on Thepkrasattri bridge last night. (See story here.)
“The Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) Phuket office reported five people injured and one death in five accidents across the island during the preceding 24 hours,” Vice Governor Prajiad Aksornthammakul said this morning at his daily report meeting.
Motorbikes were involved in four of the five accidents during the 24-hour period, he said, adding that 46 people were charged with drunk driving on Day 4 of the campaign.
The second death within the past 24 hours – that of Narong Jarat, 44 (see story here) – will not be included in the official statistics until Day 5 of the campaign, as Mr Narong died from his injuries today (not before midnight last night).
V/Gov Prajiad told reporters that he had also ordered for officials to ramp up marine safety during the holidays.
“I have ordered the Phuket Marine Office and officials at Phuket ports to be vigilant during this time and monitor tourists for safety even though there have been no reports of accident at sea or at Phuket ports (during the holidays),” he said.
