The donations were handed out by Phuket Provincial Police Chief Maj Gen Pachara Boonyasit during National Police Day celebrations at Phuket Provincial Police headquarters in Phuket Town.

More than 30 officers were injured by the mob, with some requiring hospital treatment, Gen Pachara said.

“The officers facing the mob were very patient. They were hit many times, but did not fight back,” he noted.

“One superintendent, Col Sompong Boonyarat of the Karon Police, has five stitches in the head and has been admitted at Thalang Hospital.”

The cash handed out today totalled little over B100,000, Gen Pachara explained.

“Not everyone received the same amount. Those who were hurt more, got more,” he said.

“The donations were made in recognition of the riot officers’ patience in handling the situation and for their bravery in handling the mob without resorting to violence.

“Also, this money was donated by fellow police officers. We did not use the government budget,” Gen Pachara added.
