Phuket raid nets 20 gamblers, B130K cash seized

PHUKET: Police arrested 20 gamblers and seized more than B130,000 in cash last night (Oct 9) after the high-rollers were found gambling on the popular betting board game called “shrimp and fish” at a warehouse in Wichit.

More than 15 officials, including police officers led by Wichit Police Chief Col Nikorn Somsuk and Deputy Chief for Provincial Defence Administration Jiradet Burarak, raided the warehouse, located on Thepanusorn Rd at 6:30pm.

Police said that the raid followed a resident reporting that a group of people were gambling inside.

Officials surrounded the area and arrested 16 Thais: 10 men and six women. Four Myanmar nationals were also arrested.

Police seized more than B130,000 cash, 142 betting tokens, two baskets containing players’ mobile phones as well as written records of bets placed and winning payouts.

“They were concentrating on playing the board game when we arrived,” Col Nikorn said.

“They panicked and started to run, but we apprehended all of them. Some of the gamblers were still wearing white to mark the Vegetarian Festival,” he said.

None of the people arrested admitted to owning the warehouse gambling den, Col Nikorn noted.

“All 20 were taken to Wichit Police Station to face gambling charges and further questioning,” he said.

Yep good to see law enforcement have their priorities right! Gosh aren't there more pressing issues than a few adults having a bet!! Let ADULTS make their own decisions and live by them as in any developed country, if a spot of gambling takes your fancy as a form of entertainment so be it, it's your money to lose and your decision to live by, what a joke!

Kurt...that's because the people of Thailand want it that way. Gambling causes innumerable problems such as addiction, gambling related crimes, organised crime, money laundering to name a few. If you think Singapore is immune best think again. Who would want to set up a casino in a country where the minimum wage is 300 baht per day?

Why are there many casinos owned by thai in neighbor countries, and no casinos in Thailand?
Seen the flow of thai who go neighbor countries casino there is a market for the thai government to have thai casinos.
The casinos in Singapore are well managed, corruption free, and provide the S'pore Government a lot of state income.

You are right, Ed Sanders, but in this case there was a lot of money 'to take in custody' at that warehouse.

Good to crack down on these hardened criminals, and it only took 15 police to nab 20 gamblers. Glad they didn't waste those police by putting them on patrol to crack down on drivers that threaten every man, women and child on this island with their reckless and irresponsible behavior. So many jokes that just aren't funny.

I guess the gamblers in white were celebrating a 'Happy End' of the Vegetarian Festival?
