Phuket looked to have sealed victory after taking the lead in the first half with a goal from Phiranut Jitarawongsa. However, a late goal from Yala’s Thai centre forward Muhammadfaisal Asae brought the game to level peggings, and at the final whistle the score-line remained at 1-1.
After neither team could break the deadlock during the 30 minutes of extra time, the only way the game the result could be decided was penalties.
Both teams scored the first two of their penalties, but Yala’s third, taken by Koyree Layeng, hit the post giving Phuket the advantage. And Phuket didn’t slip up with the last three penalty takers all slotting home.
The result sees Phuket progress to the Division 2 2nd qualification round which will be between 10 teams, with five advancing to the First Round, when all teams from the Thai Premier League and League 1 join the competition.
Phuket’s next game will see them take on Thai Premier League side Siam Navy in a friendly game to be played on Saturday (Feb 13) at Surakul Stadium. Kick off is set for 7pm with entrance fee being B100.
