Phuket Prison was notified at 4am that inmate Nimit Jindamanee, 45, had broken free from his handcuffs and escaped, said Phuket Prison Chief Warden Pichit Wanjit.

“Nimit was transferred to Phuket Prison on remand on June 25,” Chief Warden Pichit explained. “He was initially admitted to Vachira Hospital for treatment of his tuberculosis from July 26 to September 17. But he fell ill again and was re-admitted on September 28.

“Phuket prison officers are looking for him right now in all places where we believe he might be hiding.”

Nimit is not believed to be dangerous, but anyone who recognises him should not approach him just case, Chief Warden Pichit said.

“Instead, please call 191 and report that you have seen him,” he advised.

Warden Pichit has also formed a task force to investigate how Nimit escaped from hospital.

“I have ordered a team of officers to investigate this. They will question doctors and staff at the hospital, and the guards who were posted at the hospital to make sure this didn’t happen,” he said.
