V/Gov Chokdee’s key concern was that there was no “consistency”. Some zones would have allowed alcohol to be sold with 20 metres of one school, while others banned alcohol for hundreds of metres from the nearest school. (See story here.)
The issue – and lack of clarity – of the alcohol-free zones as ordered by the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) has drawn much criticism, especially in Bangkok, for seemingly being so poorly thought out before being implemented.
To this, The Phuket News asks our readers in our latest online poll: “How far should venues selling alcohol be from schools or other ‘education institutions’?”
Responses available in the poll are:
- No zones are required, there are already laws prohibiting the sale of alcohol to minors
- Allow flexibility, and allow zones of less than 300m where appropriate
- Strictly enforce the 300m zones as ordered by the NCPO
- Enforce zones of more than 300m, which are needed to keep children safe
- Ban alcohol entirely
