Phuket Opinion: Promoting the island's artists

PHUKET: Phuket is fast becoming recognised for its talented performers, following the success of Warunee 'Gig' Suwannurak, who has made it into the finals of the Thailand's Got Talent television competition.

Gig performed British singer Adele's song 'Rolling in the Deep' during her semi-final on Sunday evening, capturing the judge's hearts.

Although not as high profile, there is another Phuketian involved in the competition:Nai Harn-based street performer 'Romodom', well known on the streets of Phuket for being the 'silver statue' in Jungceylon and other areas around the island.

Romodom has his competition semi-final on August 26, where he will show off his unique brand of art (for an indepth interview with the amiable artist, pick up next week's issue of The Phuket News).

But these two are not the first talented localperformers to make headlines in nation-wide competitions.

In April, Jaruwat “Dome” Cheawaram became the second Phuket-born contestant to win the popular TV talent contest The Star.

In 2008, fellow Phuketian Wichayanee “Gam” Pearklin was the first winner from the island, and the first female winner of the competition.

Phuket is a small island punching well above its weight in national competitions, but locally, there are hardly any avenues for tourists and residents to appreciate local talent.

There is no Phuket art centre, where artists can all display their work, and very limited performance spaces.

Local authorities need to get behind genuine Phuket entertainment, and promote it just as much as they do tourist attractions such as our beaches, nightlife and elephant trekking.

Residents and tourists alike would benefit from the increased arts focus, and who knows, they might even get to see one of Thailand's top performers at their very best.
