Phuket one of seven provinces with no Songkran fatalities

PHUKET: Phuket is one of only seven provinces that has still has no record of fatalities in this year’s ‘Seven Days of Danger’, the others being Trang, Bueng Kan, Mae Hong Son, Yala, Samut Songkram and Samut Sakhon.

Meanwhile, another 55 died and 538 were hurt in 509 traffic accidents nationwide on Thai New Year’s Day yesterday (April 14).

In the first six days of annual Songkran festival, from April 9-14, 2,915 accidents killed 306 people and hurt 3,070 others. Yesterday was the actual Songkran Day, with the holiday period ending today.

Deputy Interior Minister Sutee Markboon said the 47.2% of yesterday's accidents were caused by drunk driving and 22.4% from speeding. Of all the accidents, 78% involved motorcycles. 
 
Yesterday alone, the most accidents occurred in Phitsanulok province, which had 24 smash-ups. Surin recorded the most accidents and injuries, with six and 31, respectively.

For the six-day period, Surin province has been the deadliest province with 15 fatalities, and also had the most injuries at 114.
